Grizzly Charters is located
at Homer, a five-hour 225-mile drive south from Anchorage at the end of
the Sterling Highway. This is one of the most scenic drives in Alaska.
From Anchorage you follow around Turnagain Arm (named by Captain Cook in
1778;
he was looking for the fabled Northwest Passage), with a tidal range of
+30 to -5 feet - among the world's highest. Watch for a tidal bore - a
several-foot-high wall of water with some
incoming tides.
The great Chugach Mountains are on your left,
merging into the glacier-hung Kenai Mountains as you round the end of this
scenic arm of Cook Inlet. Dall mountain sheep are often seen close to the
road along the arm.
At Summit Lake, nestled among the up-to-5,000-foot, spectacular peaks,
you'll find Summit Lake Lodge - home for some of the best home-made pies
in Alaska.
Turn right onto the Sterling Highway, and follow the clear and beautiful
Kenai River. Hundreds of thousands of sockeye or red salmon
annually spawn in this rich river and its connecting lakes. Rainbow trout
and Dolly Varden are plentiful here too.
You pass through the vast Kenai National Wildlife
Refuge, originally established for moose. At the busy little town of
Soldotna you cross the Kenai River (again), and wnd your way along the
east side of Cook Inlet and past the fishing village of Ninilchik. At
Ninilchik you can see one of Alaska's earliest Russian Orthodox churches
where it overlooks the village, which was established by Russia about
1820. Some of the residents are descendants of the original settlers.
As you near Homer, stop at the large overlook parking area (with
telescopes) and enjoy the view of jewel-like Kachemak Bay with its
backdrop of snow-capped peaks and glaciers.
Drive through Homer and onto the four-mile-long
Homer Spit that juts into the bay. Grizzly Charters is on the third
boardwalk on the right (4025 Spit Road #13).
If you don't like driving, there are multiple daily flights between Homer
and Anchorage.
We can recommend accommodations (bed and
breakfast, motel, hotel, RV parks), car or motor home rentals. Popular
activities for visitors to Homer include sight seeing, bay tours, and
visiting our world class museum. A theater produces plays with local
actors, there is a movie theater, and churches of many denominations.
There is a wide choice of good restaurants, as well as local bars, some of
which are world-famed for their unique qualities.
We live at Homer year-round, and can suggest
activities for non-fishing members of your party.
At our office, We also sell
Alaska fishing licenses, King salmon stamps and derby tickets. Kites, Wind Socks.
Apparel and gifts can be purchased to take home to friends and family.
